Melgarejo Gourmet and Melgarejo Hojiblanca win First and Third Prizes respectively from the prestigious German magazine Der Feinschmecker Gourmet.


During the last week of March, the international awards, bestowed annually by the German magazine, were publicly announced.

In past editions, Melgarejo was positioned among the top 250. Actually, in the past year edition, they were selected as one of the 50 best oils worldwide.

The German magazine describes our two oils as follows:

Proud Spanish: Olio Award 2011 considers family MELGAREJO as the most successful producer. Four out of their five notable oils are among the highest quality anywhere in the world, and two of them among the top ten oils.Chapeau!

SELECCION GOURMET, a monovarietal Picual oil which best shows the typical features of this so many times undervalued variety. Fresh and sweet herbal notes in perfect combination with ripe tomatoes, fresh cut grass, green almond and a very persistent and brightly balanced retronasal flavour. All-purpose oil, it can be used for anything!

HOJIBLANCA: third prize. Melgarejo cooperates on research projects with the University of Jaén concerning the quality and sensorial aspects of Picual variety. But their oil obtained from HOJIBLANCA olives tastes wonderfully as well. It smells like fresh herbs (rosemary, mint notes), green tomatoes, tomato leaf, fresh foliage. In the mouth, first reserved and pleasantly sweet, to develop a bit later intense notes of green tomatoes, avocado and white pepper. Perfect with grilled monkfish, razor clams and cured goat cheese.
